The ICT committee has been busy over the summer months continuing to work on upgrading the schools IT infrastructure.
The school received a Department of Education and Skills (DES) grant for IT last year. A portion of this grant has been spent on replacing outdated infrastructure, and included the installation of new internet switches in the Communications Room and wireless access points throughout the school. The work extends the improved broadband speeds throughout the school.
The school now has reliable wifi access throughout its premises (see heatmap below). Each access point has the capability to support a whole class and broadband speeds of 200MB upload/download are available throughout the school for staff and students alike.
The broadband link is configured with the DES internet safety constraints as recommended by Heanet and will be fully managed by Heanet this year.
The school is in a great position this year to continue to build on ICT themes. Along with the on-going ICT upgrades (software patching, security related issues etc) – the committee is hoping to be more involved with other projects – ICT week, codor dojo, Scratch programming, etc...
* If you think you would like to be involved – then please contact us to let us know how you can help out.
Finally – we would like to extend a special thanks to Andrew Barnes who spent many a late night installing the IT infrastructure over the summer months.
