St Patrick's NS recently purchased a large number of new reading books from the extensive Oxford Reading Tree Readers range to support our English Language Curriculum reading programme for junior classes. We have used the Oxford Reading Tree readers for many years, as they help promote independent reading, as well as reading for pleasure. The purchase of these new range of reading resources, funded by a grant from the DES, means children can enjoy a wide range of books in a variety of formats and genres. They also complete group activities, based on shared texts.
As you see, the children have already begun reading and enjoying these books, both in-class (during literacy time) and for homework. This wonderful resource allows the children to read material at their own level, and to engage in a small-group setting to explore the book, improving their comprehension level.
A big 'Thank you' to Heather Jordan who oversaw the review of the existing stock, research into the possible options, consultation with Class Teachers and AEN Support Teachers and also the purchasing process. There is general delight with this new collection of books to support the teaching of reading.
These new books are complemented by our on-line reading resource, Reading Eggs, which is funded by the PTA and allows every pupil from Junior Infants to 6th Class to access Reading Eggs and Reading Eggspress at home as well as at school. The children practise what they have learned in class, and parents can enjoy the experience with them at home while viewing their progress on-line.
