The school hosted an Autism Education Day that was particularly special because the facilitator was Adam Harris, founder and CEO of AsIAm, and past pupil of our school.
There was a busy programme, starting with a seminar for parents and then three separate workshops for children from 2nd to 6th Class, as well as staff.
Throughout the day, group after group were enthralled by Adam's compelling presentations as he told his story and explained how life is experienced from the perspective of someone with autism. His entertaining use of story and images, as well as some fun games added to the amazing day.
The challenge to open a sweet wrapper with Adam's 'magic gloves' was VERY popular!
Afterwards, Adam sent this lovely message:
Thank you so much for your hospitality today. Thoroughly enjoyed my visit - such a lovely school community! I also knew, from my own experiences of it, the lovely inclusive ethos of St Patrick's, but today really reaffirmed just how strong it is. I visit enormous numbers of schools and you can take it from me that you guys are showing real leadership in the space! Thanks, Adam
For the school, it was such a privilege to have Adam to speak with our staff, parents and especially children. His engagement with the children was very warmly received, and staff were really impressed by the interaction. We all wish him ever continuing success in his important education and advocacy work on behalf of the autism community. For further information on AsIAm, click HERE.
