Welcome to the Library at St Patrick’s National School. Thanks to the tremendous fundraising efforts of parents over the past year, together with the determined commitment of the school’s staff, Board of Management, PTA and Library Committee, we have over 4,000 up-to-date children's books in our Library and it is still growing! We can offer both fiction and non-fiction, each covering a wide range of interests and reading abilities. We would like all the children to have the very best opportunity to make the most of what our Library has to offer, so here is some information that we hope will be useful:
Each day from 08:25-08:45 we have a special time for parents/carers and children to visit the Library together, either to borrow books or simply to browse. We can also give advice on reading choices. You are all welcome to come along whenever you can. All classes have a fortnightly timetabled visit to the Library on Thursdays. Please make sure your child brings his or her library book(s) into school on Library day so they can be exchanged for new ones.
Children are allowed to borrow one book at a time. However, children who regularly come in the
morning may borrow up to three books. Books may be borrowed for a maximum of 21 days,
but we suggest that they are exchanged fortnightly to encourage good Library habits and so that
a wide variety of reading material can be enjoyed.
We are glad to renew loans if you wish, unless the book has been requested by another child.
Caring for Library Books
Please encourage your children to look after their Library books. The rules are: please use a book mark and do not bend the page down, try not to tear or crease the pages, handle the books with clean hands, don’t bend the spines back or most important of all - keep books away from leaking water bottles.
Lost or Damaged Books
If you think your child has lost or badly damaged a Library book, please contact your child's Class Teacher or a member of the Library Committee who is on duty in the mornings.
Requests, Reservations and Comments
There is a messages book in the Library, where children can tell us about books they would like to
see in the Library. We have a comments box, and parents are welcome to make suggestions too!
If a child would like a book that is out on loan to someone else, we can reserve it for them.
Choosing the Right books
We have a variety of resources to help you and your children choose books that are age appropriate and they will enjoy reading. Please ask your child’s teacher or one of the Library Committee if you would like help. Should you wish to see a list of your child’s reading profile this is available on request.
The organisers of the Boden fashion evening taking place in the school on 20th October have very kindly offered the proceeds of the evening for the purchase of new Library books. We hope that as many of you as possible will be available to support the event, along with family and friends.
We welcome ongoing donations of books that you no longer wish to keep, that are in excellent condition.
Books that are not suitable for the Library itself will be sold at our annual book sale (usually during Term 2).
We hope that your children will have years of happy reading at St Patrick’s.
